As a child, Martin was arrested for shoplifting and sent to a Brisbane boys’ home, where he was sexually abused by people who were supposed to protect him. In 2019, Martin began his healing journey by applying to the National Redress Scheme to achieve recognition and justice for the crimes that were done to him. Prior to this, he had never discussed his experiences with anyone, remaining silent for more than 50 years.
In 2020, Martin’s case concluded and he received two payments from the scheme. Martin agreed to talk to us because he wanted to help other survivors start on their own journey of healing. As a proud Aboriginal man, Martin’s story delivers a powerful message that engaging with the National Redress Scheme can be an important step on the path to overcoming feelings of shame and guilt.
